Advances in technology\, the cost of computing and the speed of communication in just the last seven years have brought industries higher performance\, optimization\, visibility\, advanced system diagnostics with high reliability and availability\, fault tolerance\, analytics and production yields that unquestionably have revolutionized all industry sectors. Convergence of site automation system technologies and traditional enterprise IT systems have become more prevalent and provide opportunities such as the remote mobile worker\, integration into MES and ERP systems and remote access for troubleshooting and support. This is the one side of the blade most sought after.The flip side to these efforts and strategies has also brought untraditional risk to these systems. Risks with low likelihood and questionably low to mid impact are no longer the case as integrated control and safety critical systems have indirect enterprise network connection into one digital ecosystem vastly connected to the public internet. This is the side of the blade that can and has cut deep. Cyber actors using flaws in software lack of security controls and public connectivity to enterprise IT systems have and will continue to leverage victims’ networks and systems for nefarious means whether that is ransomware\, tampering and manipulation or denial of service and view. This talk will cover strategies\, standards\, and good engineering practice that asset owner operators\, integrators and vendor delivery service groups should be doing. Also\, a walk through recent cyber intrusions and impacts analysis \nPresenter: Marco Ayala Director | ICS Cybersecurity & Sector Lead | 1898 & Co.\, Part of Burns & McDonnell \n \nMarco Ayala is a process automation professional with over 25 years of experience working in petrochemical facilities where he designed\, engineered\, and maintained process automation\, safety systems and integrated networks.  Marco is active in the oil and gas\, chemicals industry\, maritime domain including offshore facilities. Mr. Ayala is an established and respected instructor for ISA cyber courses. Large periods of downtime for these assets can cause millions of dollars in loss and limit downstream production if there are reliability issues. A common cause of reliability issues is related to overheating the convection section of the fired heater to compensate for inefficiencies in how the radiant section is operated. Utilizing recent advancements in Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) measurement capabilities allows users a measurement capability which enables safely increasing efficiencies in the radiant section’s operation to maximize reliability and product throughput while decreasing environmental impact. Recent TDL technology advancements have revolutionized the industry by allowing end users to safely run their assets at their operational limits. \nPresenter: Donald Wyatt \nDonald Wyatt has worked in the field of Analytical Instrumentation and Process Analyzers for 25+ years. He graduated from Auburn University in 1993 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He joined Fisher Rosemount right out of school as a technical sales person in their Analytical Division. Three years later he moved on to Analytical Specialties (ASI)\, an analyzer only manufacturer’s representative firm\, where he spent the next twelve years providing analytical solutions. While working at ASI he worked as a member of the team that developed a TDLS platform. He participated in two Department of Energy projects: “Tunable Diode Laser Sensor for Monitoring and Control of Harsh Combustion Environments”\, and “Advanced Combustion Diagnostics and Control for Furnaces\, Fired Heaters and Boilers”. In 2008 Yokogawa purchased Analytical Specialties. Donald spent the next seven years managing the newly formed Yokogawa Laser Analysis Division. In 2015 he moved to TechStar where he currently is in Business Development. His two primary responsibilities include instrumentation and automation project support for many Engineering firms in the greater Houston area and as a subject matter expert supporting Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometer (TDLS) analytical applications. \n \n

He has 33 years of experience in process control with ExxonMobil\, and 7 years of experience in process development research with Bethlehem Steel. At ExxonMobil\, he has been a process control application engineer working on artificial intelligence\, linear and nonlinear model predictive control\, and real-time optimization at facilities in the U.S. and U.K in central engineering offices and in manufacturing. From the mid-1990s\, he held supervisory or senior technical positions with responsibility for instrumentation\, process analyzers\, control systems\, and control applications at facilities in Texas and Virginia. From 2000 to 2002\, he was Lecturer and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rice University. \nDon received a B.S. These developments include modern and intuitive user interfaces\, customizable models to support unique process behavior\, fast and flexible OPC connection tools\, automated model building\, integration with first principles dynamic models\, improved performance monitoring among others. Surprisingly\, the principles of camouflage can be found in many HMI practices being touted today as “improvements” over past practices. Such poor designs are easily found on the web\, in magazine articles\, in vendor promotional materials\, and in delivered work products of graphics designers.
