Process Safety is all about reducing risk. Find out what tolerable risk means\, and how to employ layers of protection to reduce the inherent risks of operating a production facility to a tolerable level. Each of the layers – basic process control interlocks\, operator response to alarms\, safety instrumented systems (SIS)\, pressure relief devices and others – have their pros and cons\, as well as specifications around use. Let’s examine the tradeoffs associated with these layers when employing a process safety program. \nPresenter: Scott Hayes \n \nScott Hayes is the DCSNext Portfolio Manager at Rockwell Automation. He is a licensed control systems engineer with more than 20 years of experience leading automation projects\, as well as hands-on configuring and networking of DCS\, PLC\, HMI\, process historian and visualization solutions. SUMMARY:Automation Cybersecurity: Connectivity’s Double-Edged Sword
DESCRIPTION:Download and install Zoom software if necessary \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAqc-6qpz4pE9I35OfFow2ITMK8KRU2_mTh \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nYou may join the meeting starting at approximately 11:00 am for socializing and announcements \nThe presentation will begin at 11:30 am \nAbstract: \nToday’s automation systems are much more highly connected than they were at the start of this millennium. Advances in technology\, the cost of computing and the speed of communication in just the last seven years have brought industries higher performance\, optimization\, visibility\, advanced system diagnostics with high reliability and availability\, fault tolerance\, analytics and production yields that unquestionably have revolutionized all industry sectors. Convergence of site automation system technologies and traditional enterprise IT systems have become more prevalent and provide opportunities such as the remote mobile worker\, integration into MES and ERP systems and remote access for troubleshooting and support. This is the one side of the blade most sought after. The flip side to these efforts and strategies has also brought untraditional risk to these systems. Risks with low likelihood and questionably low to mid impact are no longer the case as integrated control and safety critical systems have indirect enterprise network connection into one digital ecosystem vastly connected to the public internet. This is the side of the blade that can and has cut deep. Cyber actors using flaws in software lack of security controls and public connectivity to enterprise IT systems have and will continue to leverage victims’ networks and systems for nefarious means whether that is ransomware\, tampering and manipulation or denial of service and view. This talk will cover strategies\, standards\, and good engineering practice that asset owner operators\, integrators and vendor delivery service groups should be doing. Also\, a walk through recent cyber intrusions and impacts analysis \nPresenter: Marco Ayala Director | ICS Cybersecurity & Sector Lead | 1898 & Co.\, Part of Burns & McDonnell \n \nMarco Ayala is a process automation professional with over 25 years of experience working in petrochemical facilities where he designed\, engineered\, and maintained process automation\, safety systems and integrated networks.  Marco is active in the oil and gas\, chemicals industry\, maritime domain including offshore facilities. Mr. Ayala is an established and respected instructor for ISA cyber courses. He is a member and contributor to the AMSC Cybersecurity efforts as Chair\, InfraGard member; Sector Chief of the Maritime Domain – Cross Sector Council for ports and terminals. Marco served on the DHS and Industry working group that developed the ‘Roadmap to Secure Control Systems in the Chemical Sector’ in 2009.

SUMMARY:Using Improved Tunable Diode Laser Technology to Increase Fired Heater Reliability
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTIONS:  \nDownload and install Zoom software if necessary \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtcOyqpjgvE9JEuDoXnOHXhDEBqLomigOT \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nYou may join the meeting starting at approximately 11:00 am for socializing and announcements \nAbstract: \nFired heaters\, used to heat process fluids\, are critical pieces of equipment used continuously in refining and petrochemical operations globally. Large periods of downtime for these assets can cause millions of dollars in loss and limit downstream production if there are reliability issues. A common cause of reliability issues is related to overheating the convection section of the fired heater to compensate for inefficiencies in how the radiant section is operated. Utilizing recent advancements in Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) measurement capabilities allows users a measurement capability which enables safely increasing efficiencies in the radiant section’s operation to maximize reliability and product throughput while decreasing environmental impact. Recent TDL technology advancements have revolutionized the industry by allowing end users to safely run their assets at their operational limits. \nPresenter: Donald Wyatt \nDonald Wyatt has worked in the field of Analytical Instrumentation and Process Analyzers for 25+ years. He graduated from Auburn University in 1993 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He joined Fisher Rosemount right out of school as a technical sales person in their Analytical Division. Three years later he moved on to Analytical Specialties (ASI)\, an analyzer only manufacturer’s representative firm\, where he spent the next twelve years providing analytical solutions. While working at ASI he worked as a member of the team that developed a TDLS platform. He participated in two Department of Energy projects: “Tunable Diode Laser Sensor for Monitoring and Control of Harsh Combustion Environments”\, and “Advanced Combustion Diagnostics and Control for Furnaces\, Fired Heaters and Boilers”. In 2008 Yokogawa purchased Analytical Specialties. Donald spent the next seven years managing the newly formed Yokogawa Laser Analysis Division. In 2015 he moved to TechStar where he currently is in Business Development. His two primary responsibilities include instrumentation and automation project support for many Engineering firms in the greater Houston area and as a subject matter expert supporting Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometer (TDLS) analytical applications. \n \n

SUMMARY:Camouflage – Poor Practices in HMI Design
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nCamouflage is the art of making things more difficult to see. Surprisingly\, the principles of camouflage can be found in many HMI practices being touted today as “improvements” over past practices. Such poor designs are easily found on the web\, in magazine articles\, in vendor promotional materials\, and in delivered work products of graphics designers. In this talk\, examples of such practices will be shown\, and contrasted to clean\, clear\, crisp\, and legible visualizations that would provide operators with a much clearer understanding of process conditions. \nPresenter: \n \nBill Hollifield \nBill is an ISA Fellow with over 40 years of industrial engineering\, control\, and consulting experience. He wrote two books – The Alarm Management Handbook and The High Performance HMI Handbook\, and participates in the ISA-18.2 (Alarm Mgt) and 101 (HMI) standards committees. Bill has (finally) semi-retired. He’s a pilot and built his own plane – an RV-12. \nInstructions: \nDownload and install Zoom software if necessary \nRegister using the form below. \nThe day before the meeting you will receive an email with the meeting ID and password \nYou may join the meeting starting at approximately 11:00 am for socializing and announcements \nThe presentation will begin at 11:30 am \nNo Charge For ISA Members!

SUMMARY:Common Fire and Gas Detector Design Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:The ISA Houston Section September Program Meeting will be held at TechnipFMC \nWhat We Will Cover \nCommon Fire and Gas Detector Guidelines \nHistorically\, fire and gas detector placement has been performed by experienced engineers using rules of thumb and expert judgement. Over the past few years\, detector placement has evolved into more of a quantitative science\, and less of an art. Experience with quantitative design techniques and advanced modeling has demonstrated that some of the historical rules of thumb actually result in very poor choices for detector locations. Modern fire and gas mapping and dispersion modeling allows for a much better understanding of the nature of gas clouds and fires that result from accidental loss of containment. All of the transport mechanisms\, including momentum effects and impingement on process equipment\, are included in these modern techniques. This discussion will include listing of some common rules of thumb for placing detectors and then explores those designs with modern modeling techniques to demonstrate the lack of accuracy in the design and explains why the rules of thumb got it wrong. \n \n(Speaker: James McGlone\, GICSP\, Chief Marketing Officer ) \nSpeaker Biography \nMr. McGlone is the Chief Marketing Officer of Kenexis. He has over 30 years of experience in the design\, development\, sales and life cycle management of industrial automation\, industrial software\, critical control systems\, measurement systems\, communications systems\, and networked embedded controllers. Jim has worked for major vendors to bring industrial and commercial products to market to solve automation and control challenges globally. \nMr. McGlone began his professional career as a production supervisor where he managed a printed circuit board manufacturing department and redesigning the department’s electromechanical systems\, measurement equipment\, workflow\, and processes to increase productivity and accuracy. \nMr. McGlone served as a multistate regional manager providing technical sales and support for industrial automation software. He became the global business development manager for Rockwell Automation’s software business and provided sales and support to Rockwell Automation’s largest global customers. Mr. McGlone developed a business to provide robust sustainability to industrial control systems and improved security. \nAs vice president sales and operations of Tridium\, a Honeywell subsidiary\, Mr. McGlone developed a technology-inside strategy focused on minimizing cost to serve to grow the business while optimizing logistics worldwide. As the acting general manager of the Asia Pacific business\, he developed the market in China\, Singapore\, Australia\, and South Korea.\nMr. McGlone has successfully managed industrial cybersecurity projects in the food\, oil & gas\, power generation\, and water industries as a Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP) \nTicket Prices ($20.00 Member with RSVP and Non-Member $30.00) \n(Parking Info) \nAttendees should park on the first floor of the garage in visitor parking then proceed to the TechnipFMC reception desk on the first floor of the building (Energy Tower II ET2) for a name tag. SUMMARY:Professional Engineering (PE) Study Group for the Control Systems Exam (CSE)
DESCRIPTION:For seven years\, in the ten (10) weeks leading up to the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam for Control Systems Engineering (CSE)\, the ISA Houston Section has offered to help members prepare for the exam by hosting weekly study group sessions at a convenient local venue. In this eighth year of the initiative\, Wood has been kind enough to host the sessions at their Thoroughbred building in the Energy Corridor. \nWith a participant success rate of ~80%\, the study sessions are a valuable tool in the licensing process since the NCEES board does not have any official study material for the CSE PE exam (http://ncees.org/exams/exam-preparation-materials/exam-prep-materials/) \nPE Study Group Calendar Weekly Topics:\n\nAugust 21 – Measurement Part I\nAugust 28 – Measurement Part II\nSeptember 4 – Signals\, Transmission\, and Networking Part I\nSeptember 11 – Signals\, Transmission\, and Networking Part II\nSeptember 18 – Final Control Elements Part I\nSeptember 25 – Final Control Elements Part II\nOctober 2 – Control Systems Part I\nOctober 9 – Control Systems Part II\nOctober 16– Safety Systems Part I\nOctober 23 – Safety Systems Part II\nOctober 25 – Exam Day
