SUMMARY:An Overview of Open Process Automation and Industry Adoption Update
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nOpen\, interoperable control isn’t a future vision anymore – it’s here\, and it’s reshaping global standards. \nOver the past decade\, The Open Group Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF) has turned a bold idea—breaking vendor lock‑in in process control—into the O‑PAS standard\, a “standard of standards” that aligns existing technologies into a truly modular\, multi‑vendor architecture. O‑PAS gives owner‑operators a way to decouple hardware from software\, adopt IT‑aligned architectures\, and modernize brownfield assets without another generation of closed DCS lock‑in.  O‑PAS is no longer just a document—it’s a growing set of real plants\, real projects\, and real teams proving that open\, interoperable control systems can be safer\, more flexible\, and more economical than the legacy status quo. \nThis presentation will provide an overview and update on the current state of adoption. \nLocation: \n ONLINE ONLY – Zoom Web Meeting \nPresenters:  \n \nDon Bartusiak\, PHD \nPresident – Collaborative Systems Integration \nDon’s Bio:  \nDon brings 35+ years of experience in the Process Control industry to his current role as President of CSI. Prior to founding CSI\, Don was the Chief Engineer of Process Control at ExxonMobil. From 2016 to 2023\, he served as elected Co-Chair of The Open Process Automation Forum. \nDon is a global authority in the field and has implemented ground-breaking innovation\, notably real-time AI predictive control solutions. \n \nTrevor Cusworth \nVP of Sales & Marketing – Collaborative Systems Integration \nTrevor’s Bio:  \nTrevor brings over four decades of experience in automation and software across diverse industries. His journey encompasses strategic roles at Schneider Electric\, Invensys\, and Deloitte Consulting\, where I’ve led initiatives to enhance business performance and operational efficiency.  A significant part of his career has been dedicated to the advancement of Open Process Automation (OPA). Serving as a past co-chair of the Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF)\, Trevor has been instrumental in developing and promoting standards that foster interoperability and innovation in process control systems. \n  \nRegistration Fee: $0.00 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nYou may join the meeting starting at approximately 11:00 am for socializing and announcements. \nThe presentation will begin at 11:30 am. \n  \nRegister Now! \n

SUMMARY:The Contextual Foundation: Unlocking Industrial AI Value
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nTo many automation engineers\, AI feels like a buzzword\, especially considering recent studies showing up to 95% of projects fail to yield measurable business value. This high failure rate is a direct rerun of the ‘pilot purgatory’ that plagued early digital transformation efforts\, where scaling was impossible due to fragmented\, siloed\, and non-contextualized data. \nJust as in many machine learning efforts where 80% of the work was in data janitorial tasks\, a successful industrial AI implementation is anchored on effective data contextualization to establish a robust industrial knowledge graph. This session cuts through the hype to provide an engineering-focused rationale for moving from pilot to production. \nWe will highlight the unique complexities of industrial data—from time series to P&IDs—and illustrate why a contextualized foundation is the single most critical step. Finally\, we showcase the concrete benefits (such as reduced downtime and “autonomous” operations) achieved by applying specialized AI agents onto a unified industrial knowledge graph\, using real-world examples to prove that sustained value realization is achievable. \nLocation: \n ONLINE ONLY – Zoom Web Meeting \nPresenter:  \n \nPrabu Parthasarathy \nGlobal VP – Strategic Projects\, Cognite \nPresenter’s Bio:  \nAs the Global VP – Strategic Projects at Cognite\, Prabu helps combine domain expertise and digital technology to help clients across upstream and midstream industries harness the power of data and AI to optimize their operations\, reduce emissions\, and enhance safety. \nWith over 20 years of international experience in the Oil and Gas sector\, he has a deep understanding of the technical and business challenges that our clients face\, and how to deliver value by combining domain knowledge with digital technologies. Before joining Cognite\, Prabu was the VP of Intelligent Operations at Wood Group\, where he oversaw a global business line that provided advanced technology solutions to the process industry. \nRegistration Fee: \nMembers: $0.00 \nNon-members: $5.00 \nRegister Now!

Tom worked\non several of the world’s largest and most advanced offshore O&G production facilities.\nAuthor (book): Human Barrier Design and lifecycle\, a Cognitive Ergonomics Approach\nand Path forward (published May 2024). \nAbstract: The presentation demonstrates the application of a newly published and peer-reviewed\ndesign and lifecycle model to an alarm IPL. The same model equally applies to a SIF\nmaintenance bypass\, or a safety critical maintenance task performed on a high\nconsequence SIL 3 SIF. Current global practice and standards\, including IEC 61511\,\nlack the capability to prevent an entire class of designed-in failure types that remain\npersistent and\, as yet\, unmitigated contributors to safety system failure. The presentation\nbegins with a brief review of alarm IPL and SIF failures that were causal contributors to\nthe Deepwater Horizon accident. Indicating failure in the post-accident industry\nresponse\, a 2023 NASEM report assessed these functions to be a continued major\nsource of systemic risk in the US offshore O&G industry. The first-of-kind\, project executable model employs cognitive ergonomics\nand engineering psychology to prevent and mitigate what\, for most\, remain hidden design errors that mislead and failure to\nadequately support operators and maintenance personnel. The model aligns to and is\nintended to supplement IEC 61511 and like safety practice and standards in these areas.\nAttendees will be introduced to the next logical next step in safety design.

SUMMARY:Energy Correlation and the Centertap Torus Flow Measurement System
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThis presentation describes an innovatively designed primary flow element and the calculation of flow by the ENERGY CORRELATION METHOD. It addresses several limitations of flow rate measurement by orifice flowmeters and other differential pressure devices. Some of those mechanical and performance limitations are; (a) maximum allowable differential pressure to limit bending of the plate; (b) requiring pseudo-fully developed velocity profile approaching the orifice plate; (c) minimum downstream straight run and distance of protruding secondary instruments downstream of the orifice plate; (d) edge sharpness of the plate bore; (e) effect of flow profile distortions on single point wall pressure taps; (f) only single phase clean fluids; (g) concentricity of the plate bore to the pipe axis; (h) long upstream-downstream meter runs; and (i) ability to perform diagnostics on the primary unit. \nThis presentation presents experimental data that demonstrates how an innovative design can address those limitations and achieve reliable and repeatable flow rate measurement capability by this Differential Pressure (DP) type flowmeter. This primary element can be installed to measure gas\, liquid\, steam\, waste-water flows\, and other fluids with known or predictable fluid properties (density and viscosity). With addition of two other instruments\, this device can also measure multiphase fluid flows within current field accepted limits of measurement uncertainty. With addition of another DP transmitter\, in the event of measurement anomaly due to changes in fluid properties\, failure of mechanical setup\, or instrumentation\, the flow computer can alarm the operator. \nPresenter: \nDave Bell – President\, Bell Technologies \n \nDavid (Dave) Bell has been the owner and Chief Technology Officer of Bell Technologies\, LLC since its inception in 2010. He has been working with metering and control valve design\, development\, and sales for more than 50 years with companies such as Marathon Pipeline Co.\, Explorer Pipeline Co\, M & J Valve Co\, Daniel Systems\, Puffer-Sweiven\, and Precision General. In 1970\, as Project Manager for Explorer Pipeline Co.\, Dave was instrumental in the design and installation of the pipeline stations start-ups. Dave has 11 patents to his name for new developments around flow technology and is currently a COGFM member of the API. \nInstructions:  \nOnline attendees:\nDownload and install Zoom software if necessary\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwudeqsrTorHtIS3PPXxjHqWgyTBjfMVTr1 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\nYou may join the meeting starting at approximately 11:00 am for socializing and announcements.\nThe presentation will begin at 11:30 am.
