Wireless technology is a topic of high interest in the field of automation. New products and the entry of major suppliers to the industrial wireless market have signaled solutions for many applications. The proliferation of devices and networks has also created a lot of confusion about what is the best use of wireless technology and availability of license-free bandwidths. The presentation will include a brief overview of the drivers for consideration of wireless products in process monitoring and controls, as well as a review of various network topologies and their strengths and weaknesses. Applications with real world solutions will illustrate validated use of wireless technology for safety, environmental and process measurement.
