“Dynamic Simulation: Project and Application Successes”

with Howard Jemison, Ph.D.
Global Dynamic Simulation Consultant, Invensys Process Systems

This is a past event and is preserved for historical reference.

Venue: The HESS Club

The HPI industry has reevaluated the usefulness of dynamic simulation based training simulators to evaluate and improve new operating skills and knowledge retention with their current best practices. This has resulted in a resurgence in the use of operating training simulators industry-wide as part of a training program to improve operational performance as well as educate and validate new operating staffs’ ability to safely operate their facilities. In addition, dynamic simulation is being used to validate process design, checkout plant controls and for engineering and operational analysis.

Why Operator Training Simulation?

  • Improve operational performance
  • Improve operator efficiency and competency
  • Reduce startup time/costs
  • Reduce unplanned shut-downs because of better/faster decisions
  • Maintain and improve operational excellence and focus on safety
  • Retain and disseminate knowledge from experienced operators
  • Reduce operator training time by a factor of 4, e.g. from 6 to 1.5 years
  • Reduce OJT training costs and associated risks
  • DCS checkout, debugging, tuning

This presentation will outline a dynamic simulation application for an Upgrader Plant and will focus on the project objectives and the benefits achieved
