The trend toward IEC 61508 certified instrumentation is rapidly growing. This presentation describes process an instrument manufacturer must go through to get an IEC 61508 certification. Experiences from dozens of real instrumentation projects will point out the benefits choosing IEC 61508 certified instruments. These include high design quality and safety integrity. The tradeoffs between equipment justification based on “Prior Use” and IEC 61508 certification will also be reviewed.
